Synopsis: This unit will provide students with an opportunity to debate sociopolitical aspects of women's health through the lifespan, in the context of the Australian health care system. Women's sexual and reproductive health will be considered in the terms of the nature of women's lives, socioeconomic and cultural differences and the provision of health services. The focus of this exploration will be on the paradoxical relationship between gender and health and the use of health services, as well as an examination of women's experiences as the recipients of health care, particularly in the context of socioeconomic and cultural difference.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, the student will be expected to be able to: 1. discuss women's sexual and reproductive health in terms of the nature of women's lives and existing theories and ideologies; 2. discuss the politics of women's health with reference to contemporary issues; 3. examine women's experiences as recipients of health and maternity care, paying particular attention to socioeconomic and cultural difference; 4. debate the paradoxical relationship between gender and health; 5. debate the nature of existing and emerging conceptual frameworks as guides to practice in midwifery and women's health care through the lifespan; 6. employ reflective practice and implement evidence informed care to women; and 7. demonstrate midwifery care based on the relevant ACMI competency statements.

Assessment: Written assignment (1500 words): 30% + Guided study activities (2 x 500 words): 20% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
