Synopsis: This unit will examine a broad range of contemporary issues and trends that impact on women within the context of childbearing and midwifery practice. The focus will be on analysis of the socio-political-cultural frameworks that inform the development and practice of midwifery. The scope and provision of midwifery practice in Australia from a legal, ethical, government and service perspective will be examined. The unit will examine global perspectives in the development and delivery of midwifery services.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, the student will be able to: 1. Analyse the historical and contemporary issues in the development of the midwifery profession 2. Discuss the scope of midwifery practice in Australia and internationally 3. Discuss models of maternity care and service provision in Australia 4. Describe the legal requirements related to midwifery practice 5. Examine the politics of maternity services 6. Explore contemporary issues and trends which influence midwifery practice 8. Explore the link between theory, policy and practice issues in midwifery 9. Discuss access and equity issues pertaining to special populations 10. Demonstrate competency according to selected ACMI Competency Standards for Midwives (1998)

Assessment: Written assessments: 80% + Presentation: 20%

Contact Hours: Four (4) hours off campus workload including a variety of online lectures, seminars, interactive exercises and guided study activities each week for 13 weeks. One (1) hour tutorial on campus per week per week for 13 weeks. Seven (7) hours self directed study time per week for 13 weeks.
