Course description

When students take the Bachelor of Visual Arts degree and the Bachelor of Education in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study.
Teaching is a recognised and well-regarded career path for visual art graduates. In addition to art education, graduates of visual arts/education may practise professionally in one or more art media, or may become involved in art gallery activities, cultural programs, or a range of art and design industry activities.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 192 points, consisting of the following:
(a) Studies in visual arts (96 points), including a major study (three years of study in a single discipline), a minor study (two years of study in a single discipline) and two additional first-year units.
(b) Studies in education (96 points), a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included.

Methods and practice of teaching units

Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in arts must satisfy the requirements for the study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A and B sequence = method set) in their fourth year (or third and fourth years for Gippsland students) and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education including an extended teaching fieldwork. This fieldwork is a program of field visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching experience. The fieldwork placement is an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.

For the Clayton students, the education component of the double degree will be offered at Clayton campus and the visual arts component will be offered at the Caulfield campus.
