Synopsis: This unit is designed to introduce students to the climate of classrooms in secondary schools. Students will consider the design of teaching and learning experiences, management of classrooms, the introduction of strategies and technologies into the teaching and learning context, and the impact of these considerations on curriculum. Students will be asked to explore the relationships between educational theory and classroom practice.

Objectives: The broad aims of this unit are to develop an understanding of appropriate teaching and learning experiences for use in secondary school classrooms; to introduce a range of approaches which lead to effective classroom management; to introduce the use of communication and learning technologies in classrooms; to explore the relationship between educational theory and classroom practice through personal experience; to investigate current trends in curriculum design and implementation. As a result of studying this unit students are expected to be able to select and design appropriate teaching and learning experiences; interpret and critique a range of curriculum documents; use communication and learning technologies in a variety of settings; implement a variety of approaches which lead to effective classroom management.

Assessment: Assignment (50%); journal responses (25%); portfolio items (25%)
