Synopsis: This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and preparation strategies necessary for the secondary teacher of visual arts. Students taking this unit will have expertise in studio practice; ability in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture or ceramics is required. Students will be encouraged to draw upon their knowledge of studio arts to design and implement lessons suitable for a range of levels in the secondary school.

Objectives: Specifically this unit requires students to reflect on their own art practice in order to bring personal artistic expertise to the task of teaching in schools; undertake a consideration of art materials and techniques suitable for the secondary school curriculum; provide learning activities in a selection of studio areas at secondary levels; design, prepare and teach art activities during the practicum.

Assessment: (Clayton on campus FT students): Art biography Essay (1500 words): 30% + Series of short prescribed Readings & associated tasks (equivalent 2500 words): 70% + Successful completion of supervised school experience + (Gippsland off-campus students): Art biography Essay (1500 words): 30% + Readings & Tasks (2500 words): 70%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week

Prerequisites: Two full years of study in studio practice at tertiary level
