Course description

This double-degree program enables students to complete both courses in four years of full-time study, with overload.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Information Systems (Information Management) and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 204 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in information management and systems (108 points), including a major study (three years of study in a single discipline), a minor study (two years of study in a single discipline). Students will be required to overload by six points in each of years two and three.
(b) Studies in education (96 points), a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included.

Methods and practice of teaching units

Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in arts must satisfy the requirements for the study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A and B sequence = method set) in their fourth year (or third and fourth years for Gippsland students) and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education including an extended teaching fieldwork. This fieldwork is a program of field visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching experience. The fieldwork placement is an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.
