Course description

This double-degree course provides the opportunity to focus on commerce and business concepts as well as the theory and practice of teaching. This course qualifies graduates as secondary school teachers. Students complete a major specialisation in one of the following disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, finance, econometrics and business statistics, management or marketing.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education, a candidate must successfully complete units totalling 204 points from the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton), consisting of the following:

  1. Studies in commerce (108 points) chosen from units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton), which must include:
    1. Six compulsory common core units (36 credit points) At least two units from the following list:

      First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

    2. A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 credit points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least 12 credit points at each of second and third-year). All units taken as part of the major specialisation must be taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus)
    3. A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 credit points).
    4. A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 credit points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
  2. Studies in education (96 points) chosen from the Faculty of Education.

Methods and practice of teaching units

Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in commerce must satisfy the requirements for the study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A and B sequence = method set) in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Generally to qualify for a secondary teaching method, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education including an extended teaching fieldwork. This fieldwork is a program of field visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching experience. The fieldwork placement is an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.

This is a conceptual outline only. It gives a general indication of how the course will progress. It is subject to change without notice. Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator prior to commencement of the relevant year.

Fieldwork

Students must successfully complete teaching practice, which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised fieldwork in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.

Professional recognition

On completion of the double degrees, graduates will have a sound preparation for entry into the business and/or the education and training professions. Graduates will be eligible for employment as secondary school teachers in Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities.
