The course is designed to provide rigorous theoretical and practical knowledge in business law and to develop an understanding of and an ability to analyse a wide range of legal problems arising in the practice of business law. The course is of direct relevance to those involved in commerce, either as legal advisers, or in the private, commercial, or government sectors. The course will enhance relevant skills for students seeking placements in legal commercial and governmental regulatory and compliance positions, especially in Australia and Asia.

Applicants may be required to complete introductory law units if, in the view of the course director, they are not adequately equipped to enter the program without this preparation.
Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of four credit exemptions for units considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study. Credit exemptions are restricted to relevant units completed within the last five years.
(a) Students must complete at least four units (24 credit points) at 5000-level from a range of units offered by the Department of Business Law and Taxation:
(b) The remaining four units (24 credit points) may be chosen from 9000-level units, 4000-level units, or 5000-level units (listed below or in (a) above).
Students can choose up to two
units from other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics or from
other faculties, with the approval of the course director.
Students may also undertake, with the approval of the course director, a minor
thesis (BTF5490) (24 credit points) or a research project (BTF5800) (6 credit
points) or BTF5900) (12 credit points).
Students can choose up to four units approved for the Master of Commercial Law
offered by the Faculty of Law, provided the course director is satisfied that
every unit so chosen does not substantially duplicate a subject previously
completed by the candidate.
