Master of Information Management and Systems Professional

Course code: 3324 + Off-campus (Caulfield) + Australian residents - 2005 annual fees: TBC + International students - 2005 annual fees: $20,400, or $2550 per six-point unit + Course director: Ms Kerry Tanner

The Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) Professional builds on and extends the MIMS course. It gives students the option of extending and deepening their skills and knowledge in information systems/information management by studying at least two specialised areas of IS/IM and undertaking units that are designed to enhance career prospects, eg industry placement and projects. It is designed to deepen and develop students' professional education and broaden their career options.
MIMS Professional graduates will be able to offer companies, organisations and consultancy firms the kind of in-depth information systems/information management knowledge and skills that they need to develop coordinated enterprise-wide plans and strategies for the development and management of information technology, information systems and information management, to achieve systems integration and to manage change.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications should normally enter via the faculty's Executive Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Students who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information systems or information management may be granted credit or advanced standing. The granting of more than 24 points of credit or advanced standing is rare. Students who have been granted credit or advanced standing must still meet the specialisation and foundation unit requirements in order to complete the course.

Course length

The course is four semesters full-time or eight semesters part-time.

Course structure

To qualify with the MIMS Professional, students must complete 96 points of graduate units - a minimum of 72 points from the School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) and a maximum of 24 points of free choice electives. These free choice electives can be taken from any graduate program in the faculty, or, with the approval of the course leader, a maximum of 12 points of these free choice electives may be taken from other faculties of the university. The SIMS units in the MIMS Professional are shown in the list below. Each student's course of study must include four foundation units and at least two specialisations from information technology management, information systems development, business intelligence, knowledge management, e-business, library and information services, or electronic recordkeeping and archiving.
Students should take careful note of prerequisites for the units in the specialisations that they have chosen and complete these units early in their course. Some units have foundation units as prerequisites. The foundation units have been designed for students with little prior study in information technology.
The final professional development phase of the course comprises 24 points of advanced units, selected according to the individual student's needs. For details, see under `Professional development' in the following unit listing.
Students who successfully complete
24 points of study from SIMS graduate units may exit the course with a Graduate Certificate in Information Management and Systems. Students who successfully complete 48 points of study, of which at least 36 points are from graduate units within SIMS, may exit the course with a Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems. Those who successfully complete 72 points, of which at least 60 points are from graduate units within SIMS, may exit the course with a Master of Information Management and Systems.
