Information Technology

Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems

Course code: 2420 + Off-campus (Caulfield) + Australian residents - 2005 annual fees: TBC + International students - 2005 annual fees: $20,400, or $2550 per six-point unit + Course director: Ms Kerry Tanner

The course aims to prepare students for careers in information management and information systems. Graduates are expected to play leading roles in the profession in Australia and other countries.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications should normally enter via the faculty's Professional Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Students who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information systems or information management may be granted credit or advanced standing. A maximum of 24 points of credit or advanced standing is available.

Course length

The course duration is two semesters full-time or four semesters part-time.

Course structure

To qualify with the graduate diploma, students complete 48 points of graduate units. The units are to be selected from the graduate units of the School of Information Management and Systems, however up to 12 points may be taken from outside the School of Information Management and Systems, subject to approval by the director of graduate studies.
Certain units require background knowledge specific to particular specialisations, and admission to these units will need the approval of the unit coordinator. Students without appropriate background knowledge will be required to satisfactorily complete the appropriate foundation units, eg IMS9001, IMS9003, IMS9043, IMS9049, or IMS9300, before proceeding to other graduate units (these units all have codes with the pattern IMS5xxx).

Professional recognition

Students who successfully complete the graduate diploma may, depending on their unit choice, be eligible for professional recognition by the Australian Library and Information Association, the Australian Society of Archivists, or the Records Management Association of Australia.
