Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (HEDU)

The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education is designed to equip teachers in higher education institutions for the rapidly changing teaching and learning environment in which they operate. It seeks to encourage a scholarly and professional approach to university teaching. Upon completing the course, participants should be able to demonstrate knowledge and competence in the following areas: designing and evaluating a teaching program, using a range of teaching methods, designing and applying assessment strategies and providing student support, and planning and undertaking an educational change project.

Participants should also be able to demonstrate the application of the above knowledge and competencies to their discipline or professional area. Currently, the course is available only to academic staff members at Monash.

Admission requirements

Participants must have a first degree or equivalent qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards. Participants must be actively involved in tertiary teaching.

The course comprises three core units and one elective unit:

# Note: Participants may substitute up to two units from the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education with directly relevant units in the Graduate Certificate in Law Teaching (course code:3383) or the Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education (course code: 3413), i.e., unit HED5002 teaching for learning may be substitute with LAW7288 tradition and practice in law teaching or MEU002 developing clinical teaching and supervision, with the approval of the course coordinator.

Also note that HED5001 is a prerequisite for units: HED5002, HED5003 and HED5004. HED5001, HED5002 and HED5003 are prerequisites for HED5004. However, students should consult the course coordinator to assist in planning their program if a different pathway is required.

Course length/workload required

This course is equivalent to one semester of full-time study but will normally be taken as part-time study over four semesters. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 12. However, the course is designed to integrate with an academic's regular duties; therefore much of this time would ordinarily be a component of those duties, including preparation and actual teaching.
