Teaching and learning in health professional education (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: At the end of this topic you should be able to: - demonstrate competence as a teacher and the ability to reflect critically on own skills and that of others; - identify and analysse the theoritical bases of learning in the health professions; - describe the interface between learning, teaching, professional practice and the influence of views of learning on teaching processes; - demonstrate knowledge of the principles underlying course development including the significance of needs analyses, including the role of professional regulatory bodies in course design; - develop an awareness of current trends in health professional education with particular reference to the application of adult learning theory, learning styles, flexible delivery and the role of information and educational technology; - develop course and unit objectives that link to desired learning outcomes; -describe factors that influence learning outcomes; -demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ethical and legal responsibilities facing health professional teachers in a variety of settings and contexts; and - compare and contrast different educaitonal approaches of various healh professions and consider their relevance to individual professional practice.

Assessment: Teaching practical and plan 40% Analytical paper 30% Electronic portfolio 30%

Contact Hours: The face-to-face component of the unit will be organized in five separate study days commencing at 0900 and finishing at 1630.
