This course is specifically designed for professionals working within the health care sector who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the management of health services. It caters for the special needs of medical and general hospital administrators, clinician doctors, quality assurance managers, team leaders, senior nursing administrators, unit managers and the range of general task coordinators within the health care system.
The Master of Health Services Management satisfies the course requirements of the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators' (RACMA) full fellowship and aims to meet the requirements of the Australian College of Health Services Executives (ACHSE).
Applicants will need to have a medical degree, a bachelors degree with honours or graduate diploma, or a three-year bachelors degree with relevant professional experience in health management. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require the completion of the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management before enrolling in the masters program.
Access to personal computing facilities is desirable but not essential, however access to the internet is required.
Most onshore units have a 15-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne during one week of the semester. Onshore units are coordinated to allow students to attend the teaching sessions of two units in the same week. All offshore units offered in Malaysia have face-to-face teaching blocks during semester. The teaching sessions are interactive and experiential and aim to discuss, clarify and reinforce the course content and assessment requirements. A number of guest lecturers who are recognised experts in the health services management field are involved. Onshore masters students are recommended to undertake the units MPH2040 (Introductory epidemiology) and MPH2041 (Introductory biostatistics), which are offered only on-campus.
The Master of Health Services Management comprises 72 credit points. The onshore program consists of nine or 10 core and two or three elective units taken over either a 12 to 18-month period of three full-time semesters or a three-year period of six part-time semesters. The offshore program consists of nine core subjects taken over a three-year period of six part-time semesters.
Assessment consists of written assignments, examinations and individual and group presentations.
Advanced standing may be granted for the core units where the student supplies documentary evidence of successfully completing a similar unit at a similar level elsewhere, within the last seven years. Any candidate may, with the approval of the course coordinator and the faculty, be granted credit for up to 50 per cent of their course. All advanced standing applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
