The Faculty of Business and Economics offers executive certificates as
faculty-based awards in many discipline areas. These awards offer a flexible
and business relevant program for professionals and experienced managers who do
not currently hold a university degree and need to obtain or upgrade their
knowledge and skills at graduate level.
The executive certificates involve the study of four units in the relevant
discipline area and provide for articulation opportunities, where a relevant
graduate diploma course exists, into other graduate-level courses for those
students who attain an average of credit level or above throughout their
studies.
Discipline areas currently available (with course codes):
Executive certificates are full fee-paying courses. Australian citizens and permenant residents: $1650 per unit (2002 fee); international students: $1750 per unit (2002 fee).
Admission
is open to non-degree applicants who have:
(i) at least six years business experience, and
(ii) been either an owner/manager or in a management/supervisor position
or administered expenditure in excess of $500,000 pa for at least three years,
and
(iii) are recommended by their employer or, if self-employed, provide
suitable references.
Applicants should note that there are two intakes per year to these courses,
one to commence in first semester and the second to commence in second semester.
It is strongly recommended that participants have access to a personal computer and a modem to facilitate email communication with their lecturer and other participants and electronic access to library services and access to web-based teaching material. The Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland operates in an IBM-compatible environment.
The executive certificates consist of four single-semester graduate-level units normally taken over one year of study by off-campus learning.
The course provides knowledge of fundamental accounting concepts and standards as well as practical and analytical skills in accounting that will assist managers to better understand the financial consequences of their decisions on their organisations. Please note that some of the above units require completion of a prerequisite unit. Students who take this pathway will still need a degree qualification for entry to the CPA Australia or ICAA. This requirement will be satisfied if students complete a further four units in the Master of Professional Practising Accounting (MPA) (not currently offered by off-campus learning).
This
option can provide an industry or enterprise-specific program with a tailored
four-unit and relevant postgraduate award.
For first and second semesters, students may select any graduate-diploma-level
unit available and normally delivered through off-campus learning or on-campus
through the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Gippsland campus or other
Monash University campuses. Some units have prerequisites.
This
option should be of particular interest to those with HR responsibilities who
wish to further develop their effectiveness in dealing with people at work and
need to implement flexible, cost-effective and workable HR systems for their
organisation. Semester availability is shown in brackets.

Electives must be chosen from graduate units taught by the Department of
Management, other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics or other
faculties of Monash University with course director approval.
Please note that some units require prior completion of a prerequisite unit.
Students wishing to articulate from the Executive Certificate in Human
Resources into the Graduate Diploma in Human Resources must select their units
in the Executive Certificate in Human Resources in accordance with the course
requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Human Resources.
Some equivalent HR units are also available face-to-face at the Caulfield campus.
This option focuses on contemporary management theory, processes and practices. It consists of a core of two compulsory management units with the option to select two other units from a wide range of electives. Semester availability is shown in brackets.

Two other units may be selected from either the remaining core units above (AFG9070, MGG9324, MGG9352, or MKG9470) or any complementary graduate level unit that satisfies the objectives and standards of this award and are selected, subject to availability, with the advice of the course director. Candidates should be aware of the compulsory unit requirements of the Graduate Diploma of Business (Management) and the Master of Business Management should future articulation into these courses be a consideration.
This course will not be offered in 2003.
Assessment will be a combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. Generally, a pass is required in the final examination.
All units are also offered within the corresponding graduate certificate/diploma.
Completing an executive certificate with at least a credit average will allow direct entry into a relevant graduate diploma course where one exists in the same discipline area, as well as into a graduate diploma offered within another discipline.
It may be possible to articulate from a graduate diploma into a subsequent masters program.
Applicants who have completed graduate-level units at a recognised tertiary institution within the last five years which are similar in content to a unit forming part of the course of study may apply for a credit exemption to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course.
