The Diploma in Languages (with a specialisation in Indonesian) requires students to complete a major, which is normally three years of part-time study in the language. The diploma gives those students who have enrolled in an undergraduate degree not offered by the Faculty of Arts the opportunity to undertake language studies while completing the requirement for their undergraduate degree.
Satisfactory completion of the VCE or equivalent with a study score of 25 in English (any) and a study score of at least 20 in any three other VCE studies. No previous study in Indonesian is required. Alternatively, students who have completed two not-for-degree units or two units through Open Learning Australia are also eligible to apply. Applicants who have completed a pass degree and meet the normal entry requirements may apply.
Students are expected to participate in at least 10 hours of face-to-face study per semester. This may be taken as (a) attendance at one weekend workshop on the Gippsland campus, (b) 10 hours tutoring from an Indonesian native speaker, or (c) a one-week, or equivalent, visit to Indonesia. In both (a) and (b), students are required to make recordings of tasks or interviews. Students who enter at second level will be required to undertake a minimum of one unit in Indonesia. All these students will be eligible for a Monash Study Abroad Scholarship.
All students are expected to have access to (a) a tape recorder for exams and short assignments, (b) a video recorder once per semester for 10 minutes - this will be made available for those attending weekend workshops, and (c) a computer with CD-ROM drive and internet connection once per week - this can also be from a public library or from any Monash campus.
A candidate for the diploma must complete 48 points to receive the award of Diploma in Languages. All units are six points, with the exception of INM4992, which is a 12-point unit. The following sequence of units represents a standard study program for the diploma. Students with no previous experience in Indonesian language commence at first level.
