Graduate Diploma of Languages - specialising in Indonesian

General Information

Course code: 3058 + Gippsland campus + HECS fees applicable + Attendance conditional (see below)

Aims

The Graduate Diploma in Languages (with a specialisation in Indonesian) aims at providing opportunities for Indonesian language study from novice through to professional level. The graduate diploma develops an awareness of the cultural, political and economic influences on language use and both academic and practical skills applicable to working in a multilingual environment.

Entry requirements

An undergraduate degree in any field. Candidates will be expected to nominate an appropriate entry level based on their previous language learning or cultural background. First-level entry (INM4115) is for those learners with no previous experience with the Indonesian language. Second-level entry (INM4215) is for learners with VCE or equivalent Indonesian or Malay.

Special requirements

Attendance

Students are expected to participate in at least 10 hours of face-to-face study per semester. This may be taken as (a) attendance at one weekend workshop on the Gippsland campus, (b) 10 hours tutoring from an Indonesian native speaker, or (c) a one-week, or equivalent, visit to Indonesia. In both (a) and (b), students are required to make recordings of tasks or interviews. Students who enter at second level will be required to undertake a minimum of one unit in Indonesia. All students will be eligible for a Monash Study Abroad Scholarship.

Equipment requirements

All students are expected to have access to (a) tape recorder for exam and short assignment, (b) a video recorder once per semester for 10 minutes - this will be made available for those attending weekend workshops, and (c) a computer with a CD-ROM drive and internet connection once per week (this can also be accessed from a public library or from any Monash campus).

Course structure

This course is equivalent to one year full-time (48 points), but as language units must be studied sequentially, it is normally completed over three years. The graduate diploma is suitable for beginners or those with intermediate levels of competence. Students normally take a three-year sequence of core language units (commencing at the appropriate level for their starting competence) as well as two additional units (one at either second or third-year levels and another at third-year level).
