The course allows students to combine the study of psychology with the specific
vocational qualifications available within the social welfare field. Students
will graduate with a major in psychology that is recognised by the Australian
Psychological Society, and will also possess a full welfare qualification,
recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Work.
In addition to meeting standard entry requirements, all applicants are required to complete a social welfare course administration form. This form can be obtained from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences. Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of information contained in this form, for a more detailed selection process. Applicants are strongly advised that academic criteria are not the only ones for entry into the course. Other factors such as work and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are taken into account.
The major sequence in psychology is a common program offered on the Caulfield, Clayton and Gippsland campuses by the Department of Psychology. The Australian Psychological Society (APS)-accredited major comprises 10 six-point units: nine core units and one elective unit. This course is also recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
A
candidate for the double degree must fulfil the following requirements to
receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities)/ Bachelor of
Social Welfare:
(a) complete appropriate units within the course to gain at least 192 but not
more than 216 points
(b) complete three core units (18 points):
(c)
complete the prescribed sequence in social welfare units (96 points),
psychology major sequence (54 points) and an arts minor sequence (24 points)
(students who wish to take the additional units required for registration with
the Australian Psychological Society may do so as part of their elective credit
points).
(d) undertake additional studies to complete the minimum 192 points needed for
the double degree.
The arts minor may be chosen from Australian studies, community studies, gender studies, history --politics, Australian Indigenous studies, mass communications, sociology or writing. An arts minor sequence requires the completion of 24 points, normally comprising a first-level sequence followed by two second-level units.
Students should note that the study program below outlines the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities)/Bachelor of Social Welfare for a full-time student. This program would differ slightly for part-time or off-campus distributed learning students.
