Research methods and philosophy of psychology

6 points + Second semester + Two 1-hour lectures, one 2 hour laboratory and one 1-hour tutorial per week + OCDL students must complete a minimum of 12 hours on-campus weekend school laboratory work + Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland, OCDL + Prerequisites: PSY2011 and PSY2022 or PSY2031, PSY2051 and PSY2042

Synopsis: Philosophical perspectives on psychological theories of behaviour will be reviewed, including the mind-body problem and the nature of consciousness. The status of psychology as a science will be examined from the perspectives of Popper, Kuhn, and Feyerabend. The historical development of psychology will be reviewed, both from the point of view of the influence of key individuals, and as shifts in views of the fundamental nature of the discipline. In the other half of this unit, students will continue their training in research design and analysis by undertaking a group-based research project under the supervision of a member of staff.

Assessment: Research report: 50% + Essay: 30% + Group seminar presentation: 20%
