The Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) helps students understand issues applying to
the study of journalism, understand the role of communication in modern
society, and develop practical skills and experience in the field.
Particular attention is focused on the skills applicable across print, radio
and television; desktop publishing; electronic journalism; narrowcasting as
well as broadcasting on television and radio; local, regional and international
journalism. A comparative journalism approach and knowledge of a second
language are encouraged.
The degree is designed to foster the acquisition of soundly based knowledge and
skills that will enable graduates to seek employment in the journalism and
communication industries. Journalism at Monash has an international focus, with
a particular emphasis on Asia. The course aims to provide students with an
opportunity to work in this broader region. There are opportunities for
final-year students to take placements overseas. The course addresses Australia
in its multi-racial and multicultural context, and looks at the
responsibilities in reporting Aboriginal affairs.
A
candidate for the degree must fulfil the following requirements to receive the
award of the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism):
(a) complete a total at least 144 but not more than 162 points
(b) complete a minimum of 96 points within the School of Humanities,
Communications and Social Sciences
(c) complete a minimum of eight and a maximum of 10 first-level units
(d) complete a minimum of 36 points at third-year level, including those
completed in the journalism sequence
(e) complete the prescribed journalism sequence (48 points), the compulsory
first-level mass communication sequence (12 points) and an arts minor (24
points)
(f) undertake additional units to complete the minimum 144 points needed for
the degree. Candidates may complete additional upper-level units and upgrade
the minor to a second major.

The
arts minor may be chosen from Australian studies, community studies, gender
studies, history --politics, Indonesian, Australian Indigenous studies, mass
communications, psychology*, sociology, writing (details on each discipline are

Social Sciences).
