GSC1402Media studies(ART)
Philip Dearman and Simon Cooper 6 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Berwick, Peninsula, Malaysia, Gippsland and OCDL Synopsis: Introduces techniques for describing and analysing the production, distribution and reception, as well as the formal properties, of media texts. Focuses on 'mass media' as a set of relationships between media industries, texts and audiences. Introduces these relationships in connection with studies of power and influence, focusing on particular dimensions of difference and inequality in social life. Areas of study include news production, media ownership and diversity, textual analysis, media genres (including advertising, photography, television and film), and sport. Assessment: Internal students: Tutorial presentation and report (1000 words) plus attendance and participation: 20% + Major essay (1500 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Distance education students: Minor essay (1000 words): 20% + Major essay (1500 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40% |
