GSC1901Introduction to communication studies(ART)
Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo and Susan Yell 6 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Berwick, Peninsula, Malaysia, Gippsland and OCDL Synopsis: Introduces the study of mass communication with reference to arguments about audiences, effects and technology. Investigates practices for compiling knowledge about audiences for, and effects of, mass communication technologies. Areas of study include telephony, photography, radio, print production and the Internet, with a particular focus on aspects of historical development and contemporary technological convergence. Subject readings and assessment exercises expect students to discuss these matters in relation to frameworks for making sense of social, cultural and political contexts of modern life. Assessment: Internal students: Tutorial presentation and report plus attendance and preparation: 30% + Essay (2000 words): 40% + Examination (1.5 hours): 30% + Distance education students: Reading report (1000 words): 30% + Essay (2000 words) 40% + Examination (1.5 hours): 30% |
