Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Business and Commerce

Course code: 1820 + Gippsland campus + HECS fees applicable + Attendance compulsory

Aims

In general, the aim of this course is to prepare students to be readily adaptable at a professional level to a chosen engineering-oriented environment in which application of modern business techniques is required, or to a chosen business environment in which an engineering background is an advantage, or in pursuits where a blend of both backgrounds is desirable.
In the engineering stream, the course will aim to provide each student with the opportunity to develop a graduate-level depth of knowledge and skills in a chosen engineering discipline with complementary background studies in general engineering, as well as computing, project planning and implementation.
Similarly, in the business stream, the course will aim to provide each student with the opportunity to develop a graduate level of knowledge and skills in at least two chosen specialist business strands combined with a core group of units introductory to a range of other business-oriented disciplines.

Entry requirements

Students normally complete first year of either a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree before starting the combined studies. Students are required to obtain a credit average in the first year of study.

Special requirements

PC requirement

Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word processing and other software packages. It is also recommended that off-campus distributed learning students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff.

Workload

All applicants should be willing to undertake a normal initial workload of 24 points a year by off-campus distributed learning.

Attendance

The Faculty of Engineering requires that students attend one compulsory residential school at the Gippsland campus during each teaching semester. If a student cannot attend residential schools, the result for the unit will be deferred until the residential school requirements are fulfilled.

Course structure

This double degree is a five year, full-time or equivalent off-campus distributed learning professional course and offers specialisation in the following engineering and business areas: interdisciplinary engineering with major studies taken in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering; accounting; business law; economics; electronic commerce; management; marketing.
Students must complete a minimum of 252 credit points. The units are chosen from a selected engineering discipline and business major, with specified core units and approved electives.
Students must complete units with a total credit value of 144 points from the Faculty of Engineering and 108 points from the Faculty of Business and Economics, meeting the following requirements:
(a) Complete six compulsory units:

(b) Complete a business major of at least 48 points, including at least 12 points at each of second and third levels (one core unit from part (a) may form part of the 48-point requirement).
(c) Completion of at least 48 points of business units beyond first level, including at least 24 points at third level (the business major sequence meets this requirement).
(d) Completion of the common first-year engineering followed by the selection of one of the engineering streams offered within the interdisciplinary degree.
* NOTE: GSE2703 (ENGINEERING MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS) IS EQUIVALENT TO (ETW1102 BUSINESS STATISTICS). THEREFORE, STUDENTS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED GSE2703 ARE NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE ETW1102 ON THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THE COURSE.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes, and the Open Learning Agency of Australia. The faculty's Credit Assessment and Tracking System (CATS) is a web-based record of credits that have been granted for students in the past. Please go to http://credits.buseco.monash.edu.au/ and follow the instructions to look up studies you have already completed to obtain a guide to the credits you may receive towards the Bachelor of Business and Commerce.
