The course has been designed to equip students with a broad range of skills appropriate to work in a variety of vocations. The disciplines from which students may select units for inclusion in the double degree are those taught by the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences and those taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland.
Satisfactory completion of the VCE, including English units 3 and 4 with a study score of at least 25, plus any two units from General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods at the unit 1 and 2 level. Students who have completed the first year of the normal Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Business and Commerce at the Gippsland campus with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies. All applicants should be willing to undertake a normal workload of eight units per year full-time or four units per year part-time or by off-campus distributed learning.
Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word processing and other software packages. It is also recommended that off-campus distributed learning students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff.
All applicants should be willing to undertake a normal initial workload of 24 points a year by off-campus distributed learning.
Students
must complete 204 points, including 96 points from the Faculty of Arts and 108
points from the Faculty of Business and Economics.
To complete the Bachelor of Business and Commerce component, students must:
(a) complete six compulsory units:
(b) complete a business major
of at least 48 points, including at least 12 points at each of second and third
levels (one core unit from part (a) may form part of the 48 point requirement).
Business majors: accounting, business Law, economics, electronic commerce,
management, marketing
(c) complete at least four third-level units from those offered by the Faculty
of Business and Economics at the campus delivering this program.
To complete the Bachelor of Arts component, students must:
(a) complete an arts major of 48 points. Major sequences available include
gender studies, history-politics, Indonesian, mass communications, sociology,
writing
(b) complete an arts minor of 24 points. Minor sequences available include
those listed above along with Australian studies, community studies,
journalism
(c) complete a third first-year sequence of 12 points
(d) complete a minimum of 24 points at third-year level.
Students undertaking the double degree must complete a minimum of 36 points at
each of second and third-levels; further studies so as to complete a total of
204 points of study and no more than 14 first-level units.
Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes and the Open Learning Agency of Australia. The Faculty's Credit Assessment and Tracking System (CATS) is a web-based record of credits that have been granted for students in the past. Please go to http://credits.buseco.monash.edu.au/ and follow the instructions to look up studies that you have already completed to obtain a guide to the credits you may receive towards the Bachelor of Business and Commerce.
