Bachelor of Information Management and Systems/Bachelor of Education


General information

When students take the Bachelor of Information Management and Systems degree and the Bachelor of Education in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study.
Graduates of this double-degree program will have completed qualifications that allow entry into the information technology profession and/or the education and training profession. Opportunities also exist for further study.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent including two units of mathematics (any), and have achieved a study score of at least 25 in English in units 3 and 4, and a study score of at least 20 in three other VCE units.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Information Management and Systems and Bachelor of Education, a candidate for the double degree must successfully complete subjects totalling 204 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in information management and systems (108 points), consisting of a major study (three years of study in a single discipline), a minor study (two years of study in a single discipline), and two additional first-year subjects. Students will be required to overload by six points in each of years two and three.
(b) Studies in education (96 points), a series of subjects relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in information technology must satisfy the requirements for the study of two teaching methods in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Department of Education, Employment and Training and non-government authorities.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year which will be entirely education, including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field visits to different educational sites including structured teaching experience. Students will be required to complete projects related to their field visits. The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.

Course outline

For the education component of the double degree, students will choose either secondary or primary education subjects. Secondary education subjects will be offered at Clayton and primary subjects at Peninsula.
For the information management systems component of the double degree, subjects will be offered at the Caulfield campus.

Length of course/workload required

This course consists of four years of full-time study or equivalent part-time study taken on-campus, with school or industry visits for practica. To complete the course in four years, students will need to overload their information management and systems component in years two and three. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
