Bachelor of Design(Industrial Design)/Bachelor of Education

General information

Course code: 2614 * Course abbreviation: BDes(IndDes)/BEd * Caulfield/Clayton campus * Course coordinator: Mark Wilken
Normally, the Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) degree and the Bachelor of Education degree are of three years duration each. When the degrees are taken in combination, students are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study.
Graduates of this double-degree program will have completed qualifications that allow entry into the industrial design/technology profession and/or the education and training profession.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent, including English units 3 and 4 with a study score of at least 25 and either Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics units 3 and 4 with a study score of at least 20. Entry will be based on portfolio, interview and ENTER.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design)/Bachelor of Education, a candidate for the double degree must successfully complete subjects totalling 204 credit points and consisting of :
(a) Studios at each year stage. Subjects commence at a basic level of understanding and progress to the achievement of a high level of competence in undertaking industrial design projects. The knowledge and capabilities acquired in the other subjects of the course are progressively incorporated into the work of the studio subjects and integrated into the design solutions.
(b) A series of subjects relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum subjects are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in design must satisfy the requirements for the study of two teaching methods in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Department of Education and non-government authorities.
Generally to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that subject.
Progressively over the course students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year which will be entirely education, including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field visits to different educational sites including structured teaching experience. Students will be required to complete projects related to their field visits. The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program. Opportunities also exist for further study.

Fee structure

For students with Australian residency, this course falls within the middle band of HECS liability. The fee for international students will be set by the vice-chancellor from time to time (currently $14,000 per annum).

Course outline

For the education component of the double degree, subjects will be offered at the Clayton campus. For the industrial design component of the double degree, subjects will be offered at the Caulfield campus.
