Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design)

The Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) is a three-year, full-time degree program of education in the discipline and practice of product design. It is intended for students who wish to seek employment in the field of industrial design and related areas of design or industry and commerce.
Industrial design is concerned with the research and design of consumer and industrial products used by people. These range from telephones to motor vehicles and from medical equipment to domestic appliances. The industrial designer works as a part of a team involving engineering, production and marketing.

Structure of the course

The Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) is a three-year, full-time degree program of industrial design, technology and theory education. The major product design subjects are supported by a cluster of relevant subject modules that include design communication, ergonomics, technical design principles, materials and manufacturing technology, and digital imaging. A range of elective subjects allows students to extend their education into specialist industrial design activities or other art and design disciplines. The course is structured to give students the following areas of study.

Design studios (36 credit points)

This is the main study of the course. There are studios at each year stage.

Studio specialisation (18 credit points)

Specialist area of study specifically related to the student's main discipline and will include the study of product model-making, , engineering drawing and product drawing.

Theory of art and design (24 credit points)

Students undertake a minimum of 24 credit points on the study of the theory, context and cultural aspects of art and design.

Professional practice (12 credit points)

All students take professional practice subjects in the first year and the third year of the course.

Drawing and visual structures (6 credit points)

Students take a compulsory drawing subject in the first year. This study is concerned with perceptual and communication skills in the context of visual concepts and structures.

Digital imaging (15 credit points)

All students are required to take digital imaging subjects for a total of 15 credit points. In addition, a range of electives are available to extend knowledge and skills in this area.

Technology (24 credit points)

General area of study for the acquisition of additional skills in mathematics, mechanics, ergonomics, electronics, materials and manufacturing related to industrial design to aid the student's main industrial design studio practice.

Electives (9 credit points)

Nine credit points are available for elective studies, which are selected in consultation with the course coordinator. Subjects will generally be taken from those available within the Faculty of Art and Design, but subjects offered elsewhere in the university are also available.

Length of course/workload required

Three years of full-time study. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48 (contact and non-contact), with appropriate adjustment for part-time study. The workload pattern for six credit-point studio-based subjects is typically six hours of supervised studio (lectures, group tutorials and one-to-one tutoring), plus additional out-of-studio work of six hours. The typical workload for six-credit-point theory and history subjects is attendance at one two-hour lecture plus one one-hour tutorial per week, plus an additional nine hours of study time out of class. For three credit-point theory subjects, this workload is effectively halved. An 80 per cent attendance record for studios, lectures, seminars etc is required before a student may present for assessment in any subject. Exceptions will be subject to the approval of the course coordinator.

Admission requirements

This course is normally offered through the VTAC system. Entry is by portfolio, interview and ENTER. Students must have a study score of at least 25 in VCE English units 3 and 4 and a study score of at least 25 in Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (alternatively Change and Approximation or Extension) or an equivalent course of approved study. Applications will also be considered as the basis of other qualifications assessed as equivalent to the VCE.

Credit provision

Credit will be granted for equivalent studies completed elsewhere at approved institutions. Advanced standing in the course for students who have completed part of similar courses at Australian or international universities will be considered up to a maximum of two years and in accordance with other regulations of Monash University. Each application for credit or advanced standing will be considered on its own merits.

Fee structure

For students with Australian residency, this course falls within the middle band of HECS liability. The fee for international students will be set by the vice-chancellor from time to time (currently $14,000 per annum).

Year 2 Students progressively improve their practical and intellectual skills, as they continue their educational development through core and elective subjects.
