Critical issues in design 3B

(A&D)

3 points + 2 hours lecture/tutorial per week, plus 4 hours of independent study + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: TAD2211 + Core for BDes(ID) and BID

Synopsis: The subject will investigate selected aspects of the history of design from pre-industrial times to the present day with an emphasis on later twentieth century developments. It will explore ways of critically assessing products in terms of their function, aesthetic quality, symbolic role, social context and cultural impact. Product design will be considered as part of a continuum in the designed world including art, architecture, interior architecture, media and cinema. The social responsibility of economic and marketing aspects of product design will be examined as part of a critique of design practices today.

Assessment: One essay (1500 words): 50% + One class paper (10-15mins): 25% + Visual test (1 hour): 25%
