Graduate Diploma in Electronic Commerce

Course code: 1738 * Course abbreviation: GradDipElecCom * Course director: To be advised * Offered on-campus and by distance education from the Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland * Normally completed in four semesters of part-time study * Not offered in 2001
This course recognises that the advent of, and the increase in application of, electronic methods of conducting business will have a wide social and commercial impact. The term electronic commerce embraces such diverse areas as electronic data interchange (EDI), email, video conferencing, computer fax, bar coding, electronic catalogues, electronic banking and payment systems including smart cards, shared databases and on-line services delivered via the Internet. Analysis of this impact, predicting its timing and direction, and the design and implementation of strategies for coping with the resultant change requires an understanding of change within the context of all the major business disciplines: management, marketing, business law, finance, banking, and the economics of business overall.
Applicants require a pass degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution or an executive certificate from this faculty with an average grade of credit or above. Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of four credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study.
Students must have full access to a personal computer as it is an essential tool for electronic commerce and for this course (the Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland operates in an IBM-compatible environment). Access to the internet and world wide web is also necessary for access to subject materials, to communicate electronically with lecturers, tutors and other students to conduct research for assignments. Advice is available from Monash in relation to purchase of a computer system and connection to the internet and world wide web.
