The Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) degree helps students to understand issues applying to the study of journalism, to understand the role of communication in modern society, and to develop practical skills and experience in the field.
Particular attention is focused on the skills applicable across print, radio and television; desktop publishing; electronic journalism; narrowcasting as well as broadcasting on television and radio; local, regional and international journalism. A comparative journalism approach and knowledge of a second language are encouraged.
The degree is designed to foster the acquisition of soundly based knowledge and skills that will enable graduates to seek employment in the journalism and communication industries. Journalism at Monash has an international focus, with a particular emphasis on Asia. The course aims to provide students with an opportunity to work in this broader region. There are opportunities for final-year students to take placements overseas. The course addresses Australia in its multi-racial and multicultural context, and looks at the responsibilities in reporting Aboriginal affairs.

Course structure

A candidate for the degree must fulfil the following requirements to receive the award of the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism):
(a) complete a total at least 144 but not more than 162 points
(b) complete a minimum of eight and a maximum of 10 first-level subjects
(c) complete the prescribed journalism sequence (52 to 60 points depending on the mode of study), the compulsory first-level mass communication sequence (12 points) and an arts minor (28 points)
(d) undertake additional subjects to complete the minimum 144 points needed for the degree. Candidates may complete additional upper-level subjects and upgrade the minor to a second major.
