CHM2212

Chemistry of life

Dr Patrick Perlmutter

8 points - Four 1-hour lectures and the equivalent of one 4-hour laboratory per week - Second semester - Clayton - Prerequisites: CHM1011 and CHM1022 or CHM1031 and CHM1042 - Prohibitions: CHM2222, CHM2232

Objectives On completion of this subject a student will have knowledge of the relationship between structure and function for many biological molecules. Skills will be acquired to allow the student to identify structure-activity relationships using computer based modelling. Students will gain an understanding of the relevant underlying physico-chemical principles important to chemical biology. The student will be able to choose appropriate techniques for the analysis of many important classes of biologically active molecules. The subject will provide an important basis for studies in biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology.

Synopsis The topics to be discussed in eight lecture units will include drug discovery, biologically important natural products, herbicides and pesticides, molecular modelling in biological systems, biophysical chemistry and energetics, analysis for biological systems. A detailed subject outline will be available on enrolment or from the department.

Assessment Examinations (2x2 hours): 68.5% - Practical work: 25% - Computer assignments: 6.5%
