Objectives To develop an understanding of Maxwell's equations and associated laws as the basis of macroscopic electromagnetism. To develop a physical understanding of time-varying fields and waves and acquire skills in analysing practical problems involving lumped and distributed circuits, guided propagation and free-space radiation.
Synopsis Principles of electromagnetism and wave propagation based on the use of Maxwell's equations to analyse the properties of more complicated structures such as transmission lines, plane interfaces, optical waveguides, antennas and cylindrical metallic waveguides.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% · Laboratory work: 20% · Assignments: 10%
