Objectives To develop an understanding of the physical nature of electrostatic and magnetostatic fields, their mathematical description, how they are generated and controlled, how they are utilised in the design of electromagnetic devices and how they relate to the lumped circuit parameters C, R, L and M.
Synopsis This subject will cover the principles of electrostatics, electric conduction, magnetostatics, electromagnetic induction, capacitance, resistance, self-inductance and mutual inductance. The spatial distribution of electric and magnetic fields in simple devices will be studied and the lumped circuit parameters C, R, L and M will be derived. Energy and forces associated with the fields will also be studied. Maxwell's equations and associated constitutive and continuity relations will be introduced.
