Target group

The teaching English to speakers of other languages pathway is designed primarily to meet the requirements of trained teachers who wish to gain higher professional qualifications and expertise in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Special admission requirements

Applicants who are not native speakers of English will be required to demonstrate substantial competence in written and spoken English before admission.

Credit provision

Credit for all subjects undertaken as part of either a Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL or a Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL in this Faculty may be transferred to the Master of Education (TESOL).
Teachers who have taught ESOL for three years full-time or longer may document twenty-two days of lessons in their own classrooms in lieu of undertaking an externally supervised teaching practicum and GED3860F. Teachers who have gained the Royal Society of Arts Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (RSACTEFLA) may gain an exemption of five days from the fifteen-day teaching practicum.

Elective subjects

Students must complete one of the following subjects :

plus three additional subjects (36 points). These are:
Either

in conjunction with an individual project of 20,000 words
or any additional three subjects at Master of Education level.
For professional accreditation, a teaching practicum of fifteen days must also be completed during the period of enrolment in the course.
Any of the research subjects in the Master of Education course information list may also be chosen.

Project

The project, of approximately 20,000 words, must focus on a topic relevant to teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students intending to enrol in the project must complete an appropriate research methodology subject.
