Advanced practicum in language teaching: TESOL

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed the practical knowledge and skills essential for planning and implementing English language programs for adults or children who speak other languages, including the development of teaching strategies and materials appropriate to particular learner groups; developed an understanding of differences such as age, language, culture and educational backgrounds of English as a second language learners and the implications of these for classroom teaching in a range of settings.

Synopsis This subject is based on principles and approaches to which students have been introduced in GED3823. It provides a link between second-language education theory, awareness of systematic features of spoken and written English, and classroom practice. It requires students to attend lectures and workshops and to complete both practical and written assignments. This subject is associated with a placement of at least fifteen days in a language centre or other institutional setting, which would ideally be completed in the same semester, and in any event before the end of the postgraduate teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) course for which students enrol.

Assessment A precondition for a pass in this subject is satisfactory completion of one or two teaching placements totalling fifteen days and 80% attendance at all timetabled classes - A satisfactory level of achievement is also required in the following tasks: Language awareness exercises: 20% - Focused observations: 20% - Case study of an ESOL learner: 20% - Unit of work for an ESOL class: 40%
