Furniture design 1

* 6 hours per week, including 2 studio and seminar hours and 4 independent study hours

* Prerequisites: IDE2103, APA2703 or IAR2103

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of the range of furniture types and their production; have an understanding of the recent history of furniture design; have an understanding of ergonomic structure, production, aesthetic and user needs, aspects of furniture and its contribution to spatial ambiance; be able to develop furniture design concepts and details to meet selected design requirements; be able to achieve a holistic integration of factors in their designs.

Synopsis Students are introduced to the range of furniture design types and production. The recent history of furniture design is reviewed. Topics cover basic aspects of ergonomics, production processes in timber, polymers and metals, structure, the aesthetic aspects of furniture, the identification of user needs, furniture as sculptural elements, furniture as components of the interior environment and its contribution to spatial ambiance. Studio project work is undertaken involving the development of furniture designs to meet particular design requirements.
