Objectives On successful completion of this subject, student should have confidence in confronting the task of designing objects within a framework of constraints; apply the principles of user-centred design criteria to low technology products; demonstrate analytical and design interpretation skills with respect to manually operated products; be able to identify, select and apply appropriate design methodologies; plan for and efficiently complete product design projects with the emphasis on functional criteria.

Synopsis This subject develops the students' introduction to industrial design practice. Emphasis is placed on design methodology, communication techniques and presentation skills. Exercises in the design of simple products intended for batch production are undertaken to acquaint the student with procedures adopted in the professional design arena. A functionalist interpretation of form, based on product design specification and analytical methodology, assists students to conceive, develop and select product concepts and ideas which satisfy project criteria. Tuition in design planning, group presentations and folio development skills are included.
