Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be familiar with the Building Code of Australia at a basic level; have knowledge of the performance of major materials and the methods of applying them, used in the construction of interiors; understand the basics of quantity surveying methods and project management; be capable of applying the above in an interior design project with construction drawing practice and specifications.

Synopsis Students are introduced to the application of building products, systems and technologies using the principles of small scale construction acquired in IAR2201 and IAR2202. The Standards Australia codes for major materials and processes. Building Code of Australia and other regulatory controls, with specific reference to structural aspects of construction, fire issues and health and hygiene issues. Issues of durability, movement and moisture control. Application and performance of principal construction materials - timber, metals, glass, concrete, masonry, polymers, composites, ceramics, textiles, paints and finishes, fittings and fastenings. Cost parameters, quantity surveying methods and project management. Dimensional coordination and principles of tolerances. Proprietary building systems and fittings relevant to interiors. The building code issues, materials and quantity surveying issues will be covered in lectures, case studies and/or site visits and tutorials. Students gain experience by applying this knowledge, and understanding by undertaking an example design application presented with technical drawings and specifications
