Building construction and materials A

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should understand principal methods of small scale construction; understand major materials used in small scale construction and interiors; understand the integration of elements and systems used in the building of small scale constructions; understand the basic materials science of commonly used construction and interior materials.

Synopsis Students are introduced to the principles of small scale architectural and interior construction and their application in interiors. Topics include incorporation of services, structure, materials, basic materials science, construction methods and systems. The subject includes lectures, tutorials and a `site' visit. It covers the basic science of construction and building materials, the major types of small scale construction methods, the major materials used in small scale construction and interiors, the ways in which services are integrated into overall construction and the issues of managing the construction processes. The `site' visit is normally to a commercial building site having architectural and building construction at the commencement of interior systems and frameworks stage.
