Synopsis

This unit aims to develop an understanding of Manufacturing Operations, Models and Metrics. Automation and NC/CNC. Manufacturing Systems: Single cell, Assembly line, Cellular Manufacturing and Flexible Manufacturing systems. Design cellular, lean, agile and virtual manufacturing systems. Manufacturing Support Systems: CAD/CAM/CIM, Process planning, Production planning including material requirement planning, manufacturing resource planning, shop floor control, inventory control. Manufacturing excellence: push/pull systems, pull control systems, lean manufacturing, agile manufacturing, virtual manufacturing, and JIT philosophies.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Describe different types of manufacturing and production systems.
  2. Generate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) code for the creation of simple features and parts using manual part programming and CAD/CAM
  3. Address modern manufacturing philosophies, such as Just In Time (JIT), Lean Production systems, Agile and virtual manufacturing.
  4. Analyse and design cellular, lean, agile and virtual manufacturing systems.
  5. Quantify the performance of cellular and flexible manufacturing systems, and manual assembly lines.
  6. Design an advanced manufacturing system.

Assessment

NOTE: From 1 July 2019, the duration of all exams is changing to combine reading and writing time. The new exam duration for this unit is 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Continuous assessment: 40%

Final examination (2 hours): 60%

Students are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final examination component and an overall mark of 50% to achieve a pass grade in the unit. Students failing to achieve this requirement will be given a maximum of 45% in the unit.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. If independent study during mid-semester break, SWOTVAC and exam periods are included, the total workload can exceed the minimum expected workload.
