Synopsis
This unit extends knowledge of the basic physical principles and imaging methods of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to include the MRI imaging techniques associated with cardiac and cardiovascular imaging, diffusion, perfusion and susceptibility weighted imaging.
Clinical indications and the preparation of the patient including positioning methods for these advanced techniques will be addressed. Sequence adaptations required to conform to clinical presentation, along with modifications to equipment will be considered.
The unit will conclude with an examination of the application of quality assurance principles to advanced MR imaging.
Outcomes
- Explain the principles of cardiac, vascular, perfusion and diffusion imaging in the context of evidence based practice.
- Assist in the implementation of advanced cardiovascular techniques, protocols and post-processing approaches for clinical and research applications
- Assess and clearly communicate analyses from cardiovascular, perfusion and diffusion studies
- Accurately distinguish between cardiac and vascular structures in the modification of standard MR scanning techniques
- Appraise pathology as demonstrated by diffusion and perfusion MR imaging
- Identify on-going professional development needs in relation to MRI scanning in the cardiovascular and tissue perfusion setting
Assessment
- Assessment tasks Handbook entry description:
- Portfolio of 4 advanced case studies (1000 words each) (50%)
- Technical report (1,500 words) (30%)
- Image analysis test (20%)
Workload requirements
On-line delivery - course designed only for post graduate students.
There will be video clips and video-conferences available throughout the course to assist in directing students. Discussion forums will be initiated to further direct student outcomes.
