Synopsis

This unit aims to build on the health practitioner's clinical expertise and professional experience and complement their existing knowledge about the features of x-ray images in the field of emergency image interpretation of the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine. The unit will require students to use a systematic methodology to interpret radiographic images involving trauma, sport injuries, and arthritic diseases affecting the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine of adult and paediatric patients.

A detailed understanding of the associated radiographic representation of these pathologies will enable students to provide informed and evidence based comments on x-ray images of the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine.

The unit will acknowledge the importance of clinical judgement and decision making related to x-ray interpretation of the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine. The unit will contextualise the practice of x-ray image interpretation within the broader context of the health care system.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Relate mechanisms of injury and the clinical signs or symptoms of injury with the abnormal x-ray appearances of the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine.
  2. Apply a systematic and logical approach to the radiographic evaluation of bones, soft tissues and joints of the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine.
  3. Identify and evaluate x-ray images related to trauma, sport injuries, and arthritic conditions affecting the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine of adult and paediatric patients.
  4. Apply knowledge of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and search error in the interpretation of x-ray images of the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine of adult and paediatric patients.
  5. Describe the major features of x-ray images related to trauma, sport injuries, and arthritic conditions affecting the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine of adult and paediatric patients.
  6. Communicate using appropriate terminology the presence of x-ray appearances affecting the pelvic girdle, lower limbs and thoracic and lumbar spine to other members of the health care team.

Fieldwork

Students enrolled in this unit must be employed in a clinical or academic position with access to medical imaging.

  • 2 x-ray image analysis and recognition online examinations Respondus lock down browser (60 minutes each} (25% each) (3000 words)
  • 1 iSAP x-ray image interpretation case report (1500 words) (25%) Hurdle
  • Clinical portfolio (1500 words) (25%) Hurdle

Workload requirements

Off-campus: 6 hours per week of direct engagement in the learning materials and 6 hours of self-directed study for 12 weeks.
