Synopsis
This unit is the second of two units that teach concepts related to professional practice and patient care in the radiation sciences professions.
Students will critically analyse the concept of professional regulation and they will explore codes of conduct and professional guidelines health professionals.
This unit will also include an introduction to legal and ethical aspects related to working in the health professions, with a focus on medical radiations practice.
Communication and reflective practice will be explored and students will develop these skills and apply them in a simulated environment.
Occupational health and safety, manual handling and infection control will also be covered together with application of the skills in a simulated environment.
Students will build on their previously developed cultural competence and understanding of inter-professional practice with a focus on managing patients with different needs.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Explain the legal and ethical concepts related to health care practice, including professional regulation of medical radiation practitioners
- Describe occupational health and safety (and radiation safety) considerations in the context of the medical radiation practice professions and clinical environment
- Describe and apply communication theory, cultural competence and reflective practice theory
- Evaluate the challenges associated with managing patients with a range of different needs including the elderly, children, patients with physical disability or mental impairment.
- Analyse and reflect on inter-professional practice in the context of the medical radiation practice professions
- Discuss the specific health needs and barriers for vulnerable patient populations
Assessment
NOTE: From 1 July 2019, the duration of all exams is changing to combine reading and writing time. The new exam duration for this unit is 2 hours and 10 minutes.
- Group wiki (10%), group wiki report (15%) and wiki presentation (5%) (2000 word equivalent) (30%)
- iSAP case (2,000 words) (30%)
- End of semester exam (2 hours) (40%)
Workload requirements
1 hour lecture, and a 2 hour tutorial per week, 9 hours of self-directed interaction with Moodle based tasks, readings and activities per week and online support sessions.
