Synopsis

Students will gain knowledge of the pathogenesis and perioperative management of patients with endocrine, hepatic, neurological, psychiatric and musculoskeletal dysfunction.

They will explore the perioperative implications of cancer, infectious diseases, obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea and gain a greater understanding of the management of obstetric patients and the elderly.

The role of Advance Care Planning in the perioperative period will be highlighted.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Describe the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of endocrine disorders including diabetes, obesity and sleep apnoea, and their impact on the perioperative patient.
  2. Formulate an appropriate perioperative management plan for patients with endocrine disorders and/or dysfunction.
  3. Explain the impact of renal, hepatic and gastrointestinal dysfunction on the patient during the perioperative period.
  4. Demonstrate the impact of infectious diseases on the perioperative management of patients.
  5. Develop a perioperative management plan which addresses the changes of ageing and geriatric care on patient physiology
  6. Identify the key issues associated with Advanced Care Planning and discussing end of life care with patients and their families.
  7. Evaluate the processes required for optimum patient outcome of mother and child in high-risk pregnancies.
  8. Summarise a management plan for the perioperative care of patients with cancer and with neurological and neuromuscular disorders
  9. Formulate a perioperative management plan that is appropriate for a patient with psychiatric disorders.

Assessment

  • Short Essay (1500 words) 20%,
  • Individual iSAP 20%,
  • Group iSAP 30%,
  • Long Essay (3000 words) 30%.

Workload requirements

This unit will be on-line only. The workload requirement will be 20-24 hours per week (on average).

Weekly workload consists of reading the course content notes for each module, watching associated videos or listening to podcasts, reading a selection of extended reading articles provided with each module, and preparation of assignment tasks.
