This unit examines how to advance contemporary occupational therapy practice through innovation, change, and leadership within evolving health and social care environments. Key topics include client-directed care/consumer-directed care, innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship, responding to complexity, managing change, product and service development, and on-going development of a professional identity.

Guest speakers will present on and examine topics such as identifying and developing new product and/or service opportunities, ethical practice, and funding systems and models. Students will consider application of this knowledge to their own areas of future practice.


Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse contextual, systemic and environmental factors that impact and drive contemporary occupational therapy practice.
  2. Appraise and apply the features of effective and successful leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators relevant to contemporary occupational therapy practice.
  3. Generate innovative development and marketing strategies appropriate for occupational therapists
  4. Apply and evaluate change management strategies in the context of self, professional practice, environments, and systems.
  5. Analyse and appraise aspects of client-directed care/consumer-directed care in the context of innovation, change, and leadership in contemporary health and social care environments.


  • Factors impacting professional practice essay (2,000 words) (30%)
  • Case analysis of leadership and change management principles (2,000 words) (30%)
  • Marketing strategy group presentation (20 minutes) (20%)
  • Evidence brief about consumer-driven care / client-centred practice (1,000 words) (20%)

Hurdle: Attendance at 80% of unit tutorials, practical skills sessions and seminars is required to pass this unit

Workload requirements

12 hours of study per week consisting of 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of seminar / tutorial sessions on campus plus an additional 8 hours of self-directed study will be required to complete learning tasks, undertake research and to complete assessment tasks.
