NUR5860 - Health education theory and practice - 2019

This unit will equip nurses and midwives with the knowledge and skill to apply health education theory to all areas of practice regardless of setting or context.

The aim of this unit is to research and apply health education theories to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

The content is delivered in three modules. The first module examines traditional models and behavioural approaches to health education. The second module explores contemporary theories and considers their relevance to health education. The third module applies contemporary health education theory into clinical practice.

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Analyse traditional models and behavioural change approaches to health education;
2. Analyse behavioural change theory from the perspective of long term change and complex psycho-social situations;
3. Evaluate contemporary health education theory in changing health behaviours;
4. Examine the social context of where individual and communities live and how this relates to promoting health and health education;
5. Construct and critique health education strategies to include consideration for varying levels of health literacy;
6. Design a health education plan with a focus on long term change in a complex environment.

• Written assessment (1,500 - 2,000 words) (30%)
• Critical analysis (1,500 - 2,000 words) (30%)
• Health education plan (2,500 words) (40%) (hurdle)

Flexible: 12 hours per week comprising guided readings, online activities; workshops and /or tutorials, including self-directed learning.
