NUR5850 - Working cross-culturally in contemporary health care - 2019

This unit explores the role of nurses and midwives in a multicultural society and will provide nurses and midwives with the framework to improve health care for those from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background.

People from a CALD background often experience many challenges accessing health care to include health disparities and inequities.

This unit comprises of four modules that will equip nurses with the knowledge and skills required to embed individual, organisational, systems and policy level approaches to improving health care for people from a CALD background.

Upon successfully completing this unit, students will be able to:

1. Differentiate between the commonly used and interchangeable terms used in health care when working cross-culturally
2. Apply a human rights approach to health care, recognising its importance when working with CALD individuals, families and communities
3. Identify individual health professional's skill, knowledge and attitudes that facilitate culturally competent health service delivery
4. Critically analyse organisational and systems governance structures that improve the health and wellbeing for people from CALD background
5. Critically examine past, current and future health policy developments in relation to how these influences health care for people from a CALD background
6. Recognise the resources required and challenges faced in integrating culturally competent health care at the individual, organisational, system and policy levels.

• Critical reflection case study (1,500 words) (20%)
• Online discussion participation (500 words) (10%)

Flexible: 12 hours per week comprising guided readings, online activities; workshops and /or tutorials, including self-directed learning.
