Synopsis
This unit is designed to prepare the post-registration nurse for advanced nursing practice by focussing on the pathophysiology of major body systems, patient assessment and alterations.
The unit will also cover core concepts in care of the deteriorating patient equipping students with knowledge in areas of respiratory assessment and blood gas analysis, shock management and ECG interpretation.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the unit the student should be able to:
- Analyse the pathophysiological processes underpinning complex disease states including neurological, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine body systems in specialist nursing practice.
- Apply a structured approach to the assessment of patients with complex disease including neurological, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine body systems in specialist nursing practice.
- Critically evaluate pharmacological interventions to manage patients with complex disease states including neurological, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine body systems in specialist nursing practice.
- Plan and evaluate evidence-based practice to manage patients with complex disease states including neurological, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine body systems in specialist nursing practice.
- Analyse the pathophysiological processes underpinning shock states in specialist nursing practice.
- Critically evaluate evidence-based practice to assess and manage patients in a shock state in specialist nursing practice.
Assessment
NOTE: From 1 July 2019, the duration of all exams is changing to combine reading and writing time. The new exam duration for this unit is 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Workload requirements
- 6 x 8 hour teacher directed in-class workshops and simulations per semester (48 hours)
- 2 hours of Prepare self-directed study per workshop (12 hours)
- 2 hours of Apply self-directed study per workshop (12 hours)
- 6 weeks of 12 hours of self-directed study (non-workshop weeks) (72 hours) including readings and online activities.
Total 144 hours (12 hours per week)
