NUR5112 - Nursing practice in the Australian healthcare context - 2019

This clinical unit will facilitate the transition of students into the Australian nursing workforce.

It will facilitate the development of nursing knowledge and skills necessary for practice in the Australian context and will focus on the principles of clinical competency, clinical leadership, therapeutic and professional communication, multidisciplinary team work, and clinical decision making.

The unit is learner-centred engaging the student in critical reflection, appraisal and application of evidence for practice. NUR5112 is offered concurrently with NUR5113 Nursing in the Australian Context.

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

1. Develop and enhance fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide basic safe and competent nursing care in an Australia healthcare setting;
2. Demonstrate clinical competency, specifically in the areas of assessment, clinical decision making, standard of care, care planning and implementation, evaluation of care; and understanding of the organisational context in which the nurse practises;
3. Communicate effectively with health consumers, caregivers and other healthcare professionals and be able to build therapeutic and professional relationships;
4. Apply the principles of adult learning to identify specific learning needs related to the practice of nursing in Australia;
5. Evaluate the contribution of leadership, management, teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration in the provision of quality nursing care;
6. Analyse a range of problem solving and time management strategies that enhance the organisation of clinical workload;
7. Incorporate and evaluate culturally and ethically relevant and age specific nursing interventions for clients across the lifespan;
8. Reflect critically on their own actions, professional role development and on the nature of nursing practice in relation to the management of clients' health situations;
9. Demonstrate evidence of continuing competence to practice as a registered nurse through the development of a professional portfolio;
10. Practise with increasing independence, in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMAC) registered nurse competencies; and
11. Apply a clinical reasoning process in the resolution of a number of example clinical nursing problems within the parameters of the registered nurses scope of practice.

Clinical placement six (6) weeks (240 hours)

• 4 x Pre-clinical skills assessments (40 hours total) (30%)
• Clinical portfolio (3,500 - 4,000 words) (20%)
• Clinical skills assessment (25%) (Hurdle)
• Clinical performance appraisal (25%) (Hurdle) (Students must pass clinical placement to pass the unit)

• One-week intensive workshop: 40 hours (attendance hurdle)
• 6 weeks clinical practicum: 240 hours (attendance hurdle)
• Self-directed learning: 37 hours
• Total: 312 hours
