Synopsis

This unit has been developed through a partnership between the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Gukwonderuk Indigenous Engagement Unit (GIEU).

Delivery of effective, high standard health services to Indigenous people is one of the enduring challenges facing a variety of organisations and providers.

This unit is designed for novice learners and strengthens practical skills required for implementing Indigenous equity in healthcare.

It allows students to reflect on their current understandings of Indigenous Australian peoples, equity and diversity and build further knowledge and skills.

Learning objective from the novice level of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Curriculum Framework have been utilised in the design of the curriculum.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Advocacy: Describe advocacy for equitable outcomes and social justice in regard to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  2. Reflection: Describe how one's own culture and dominant cultural paradigms influence perceptions of and interactions with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  3. Respect: Recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' ways of knowing, being and doing in the context of history, culture and diversity
  4. Communication: Recognise culturally appropriate, safe and sensitive communication that facilitates trust and builds respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  5. Safety and Quality: Describe evidence and strengths based best practice approaches in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health care.

Assessment

  • Online forum discussion participation (Pass/Fail) (Hurdle)
  • Attendance and participation in Masterclasses (Pass/Fail) (Hurdle)

Workload requirements

  • On-campus: Students will attend a 4 hour Masterclass other teacher directed activities such as a field work trip
  • On-line: Students will have 2 hours of on-line work per week.
