Synopsis
This unit allows students to apply the practical skills and knowledge they have acquired in Semester 1 to design and execute a research project. Collaborating with others, students will follow the standardised methods of scientific enquiry to look for gaps in our current understanding of a subject area, propose appropriate experimental design, develop experimental methods to test their hypotheses, statistically analyse their findings and report these findings in a globally accepted format that could be considered for publication.
Students will develop their presentation skills (both oral and written), and their ability to work as part of a productive team to complete both practical and theoretical tasks.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate research laboratory practices in reproductive biology
- Use appropriate statistical tools to analyse data in reproductive sciences
- Present research findings through both oral and written communication
- Create effective written communications to express ideas within the standardised scientific format.
- Work effectively as a scientific team to solve a problem
- Reflect on the experimental process and on group participation and learning

- Written research report (3500 words) (60%) (hurdle)
- Oral poster presentation (30%)

Workload requirements
This is a self-directed practical based unit, with a high number of contact hours for hands-on research experience.
For on-campus students, this unit is conducted over ten weeks in Semester 2. It is expected that students plan, implement and present the findings of their research project under the guidance of their research supervisor.
For off-campus students working in an ART unit, an in-clinic research project will be conducted within this timeframe. For students employed by clinics unable to offer a research project, a simulated online project will be provided.

Research project can be conducted at their place of relevant employment (no requirement for face-to-face attendance). Alternatively, a simulated online project can be offered with timelines for completion similar to on campus students.
